SIDING INSTALLATION AUSTIN: How Siding Contractors Can Help Fix Your Home

post date September 19, 2010 Posted by admin

If you are planning to renovate your Austin based property one of the things you could go for is to update the sidings. This will not only give better looks to your house and make it fashionable, but also will help protect it from water and moisture. But just like any house remodeling projects, pre planning will go a long way in saving you hours or days of frustration later. So before you call up any siding installation Austin, get your home work done.

What is siding: It is the covering you can install on your exterior walls. It consists of horizontal strips made from wood, vinyl, aluminum or fiber cement. Even brick, rock or stones are used as siding materials. These strips fit together when installed and protect your home from water and moisture.

Once you do your estimates, consider the time of the year and weather changes. Installing siding is an outdoor job and you will be responsible for the safety of people working at your home. Moreover, if your exterior walls are made up of wood, and it is rainy season, they might be wet. If you install any siding over them, the moisture will get trapped in and this will spoil your wood walls.

How can you find a good one to work with: Your first and obvious choice would be to ask your friends, relatives and neighbors. Ask for their recommendation of a company. Their experience working with one.

Ask specific questions like what was their experience with the estimates? How was the quality of material used? How was the attitude of crew members? What was the between overall estimate given and actual spending? Did they complete their job in time?

Along with research on material it will be best to look around for contractors who are really skilled at their work. Get started with the source of your choice. You can go for yellow pages, advertisements in local newspapers or the internet or simply ask your acquaintances.

While talking to contractors, always have more than one team come over and create estimates for you. This way you can make them come up with competitive prices. You can also take an intelligent decision as to what fits your requirements best.

A few more things to discuss and be particular about are the payment schedule and contract. Make sure you payment schedule according to the progress of work and do not end up paying advances. Make sure to highlight all these details in the contract, because that is something which a siding contractors Austin will have to abide by. If you do all these things right, you will have a good experience and a new face to your at the end of it.

Is It Possible to Put in Your Hardwood Floors?

post date September 3, 2010 Posted by admin

The easy response is yes. Hardwood flooring installation can be carried out by anyone with the proper tools, expertise, and sufficient motivation. However, far too many enthusiastic do-it-yourselfers have learned that putting in hardwood floors involves more commitment than they imagined. For them, hiring a professional installer is generally the best choice.

Let’s suppose, however, that you’re inspired to manage the job on your own. You realize there is plenty of work ahead of you, and you are excited to proceed ahead

In this post, we’ll present some of the challenges other property owners have experienced while putting in their hardwood flooring. This isn’t meant to be an installation “how to” manual. Rather, the subsequent will give you a reasonable understanding of the effort (and frustration) involved before starting up the job.

Resources Of The Industry

Before, the wooden boards were nailed or stapled manually. It was exhausting – even backbreaking – work, even for smaller rooms covering under 200 square feet; that strategy has generally been left behind for pneumatically-driven nailers and staplers. They are simpler to use and demand far less manual labor. Both could be rented at most home improvement outlets.

You will also nails or staples. The steel nails that were generally used twenty years ago have been replaced for cleat nails. These have a slightly hooked end that digs into the subfloor, and makes their support more snug. Staples are created with a liquid plastic resin on the tip. This resin, when heated, has a comparable effect, securing the hardwoods to the subfloor with an adhesive characteristic.

Lastly, you will need a mallet. One side is made of steel and the alternate side is constructed of rubber. This tool comes in specially nifty for straightening uneven or bowed planks.

Width Of The Boards

If you are to set up strip floors, keep in mind the maximum width of the strips is 2 1/4 inches. Compare this with planks that can have breadths up to 8 inches. A lot of do-it-yourselfers fail to understand that installing strip floors might take at least twice as much time and effort as plank floors; even when equipped with a pneumatic nailer or stapler, the in workloads is significant.

Dealing With Difficult Wood Planks

One of the biggest frustrations for homeowners installing their own hardwood flooring is that the boards are often blemished. It is worth noting that wooden strips and planks are not created the same. A few are milled better than others

Those that are milled badly may appear turned or bowed, making them challenging to operate with. Even with a mallet to help align them, establishing the planks straight against each other is challenging.

Not surprisingly, this problem tends to happen most often with cheap planks. This is a compelling motive to avoid being lured exclusively by cost. You may preserve a handful of bucks in advance, but may be setting the stage for plenty of frustration later on.

Consider The Room’s Layout

The simplest room in which to set up wood floors is one with a square layout. In such areas, it’s comparatively simple to make sure the installation has a straightened appearance. The difficulty is, a lot of areas will have odd layouts that complicate the installation

For example, the strips and planks could run into an adjacent hallway or another room; even a “minor” alignment concern may cause the flooring to appear off-balanced as it runs through the additional rooms.

Another concern is that the space in which you’re putting in the hardwoods might have moldings around the perimeter; this can be challenging, dependent on the structure of the moldings (t-moldings may be particularly troublesome). You will want to avoid chipping the surface area, or splitting them with the pneumatically-driven nailer or stapler.

To summarize, it’s possible to set up your own wood flooring and do a pro job; but it requires lots of work. Accumulate the necessary tools, make investments in high-quality materials, and be prepared for unanticipated challenges along the way.

Shed Foundations

Shed Foundations.  Don’t Start Building Without Them!

Although no one can see it of course, your shed foundation  is one of the single important considerations when building any outdoor storage building.  Without it the structure will simply not last but with a good foundation, you will have made an investment that will last for years to come.  There are different types of shed foundations for you to consider .  Here are some of the most popular and easiest foundations to construct:

Perhaps the most straightforward foundation of all is a dirt floor and this is acceptable for a pole type barn.  However, this will not do a tall if your shed or barn has  has actual framing of the walls as it will need to sit on a level, stable, and dry surface to be fully functional.

Place your shed on 6 inches of crushed gravel if you don’t have any concerns about water drainage.  In addition to this you can place blocks on this gravel and then put the floor supports on these blocks to keep the shed up off the ground.

If you are a “belt and braces” sort of person, concrete slabs can also be placed on tops of this but this is an expensive and option pouring their own concrete slabs is out of scope for most home owners.  The other thing to remember about concrete slabs is that concrete absorbs water and you must use pressure treated wherever it comes in contact with the concrete.

You could also use concrete piers that are poured below grade and attach beams that your shed will rest on.  This is a great way to keep your structure off the ground while giving the solid support of a concrete foundation.

At the end of the day, whatever foundation you decide to have you must make sure the shed will rest completely level so the doors and windows will fit and operate properly.  You must also make sure that water is diverted away from the foundation so it will not settle and cause the building to lean to one side or the other.

A good set of storage building plans will usually have a detailed description of the different shed foundation options and which one is best for your structure and location.  It’s always a good idea to check with you area’s building and permits authority to make sure you follow all guidelines and building codes.

If you’re not too experienced though, it can be a bit daunting building your own shed instead of going to buy one of the pre-built ones or a shed kit form the local building store

Here are 3 tips on what to look for in good 8x 12 shed building plans:

1.There are literally hundreds of 8×12 shed building plans available for you to download ranging from simple shed s to mock houses complete with siding and shutters and stylish entrances.  They may look wonderful but if you are inexperienced, go for a simpler model.

Think as well whether an ornate structure would fit in with your landscape.  Remember that your shed will last you at least 10 years.  Make sure that whatever you build, you’re happy to look at for that time.  How long would it take for you to get tired of a Taj Mahal replica shed?

2.Most but by no means all 8×12 shed building plans come with a materials list.  When I built my shed , I remember how great it was to take the list to various suppliers and get the best deal  on the lumber.  I even knew how many nails I had to buy!  Cut charts are also awesome as you know exactly what size to cut your lumber before you hammer a nail in. If you take these cut sizes down to your local lumber yard they will do all the cuts for you.  How reassuring will that be!  All you have to do is to fit all then pieces together like a big puzzle.  Last but not least are step by step instructions on how to build your shed, and detailed illustrations to go with them.

3.The most important feature of the 8×12 shed building plans you choose is that they will help you to check easily with your local building departments and neighbourhood covenants whether or not you are allowed to legally build this structure on your property.  Most good plans will conform to building codes.

In the end  I got  8×12 shed building plans that had a materials list, step by step instructions, skid  joint outlay & stud placemenst, detailed illustrations, wall frame, rafter and rafter details.  Even if it’s the first shed you’ve built, you’ll get it right first time and you’ll enjoy it!

Looking for Doghouse Plans?

Free Doghouse Can Be Costly!

Last month I was jogging through the park in the rain when I heard this whining.  I looked to see and out from the bushes came a soaking and rather smelly pooch.  He was kind of cute too actually!  He recognised a soft touch when he saw one and followed me home.  There was no way my wife was letting  him in the house though,  so he found a temporary home on the porch.  I called him Lucky.   I checked out the pre-built doghouses but they cost a bunch of money and they didn’t look big enough at all. So I found myself looking for free doghouse plans  online.  They couldn’t be that hard to build could they? To cut a long story short I got what I payed for with the free doghouse plans I downloaded online.  There were no dimensions and  “the directions” just said. “To determine the size of the doghouse, first assess look at how big your dog is, and decide how much space he or she will need.” I couldn’t even make out the illustrations from chicken scratch.  Just as well too that the neighbour looked over the fence to tell me not to use pressure treated lumber or our new found friend would have poisoned himself if he had taken a chew on the wood.  Nowhere in these free doghouse plans were there any warnings about that!

Here comes the good news. Our new friend Lucky had a new kennel within two weekends!

I found awesome doghouse plans online that I payed a little bit of money for.  Effectively I had access to the expertise of a guy who has successfully designed doghouse after doghouse. They came with by step instructions, cut charts, 3D illustrations of the finished product.  One of the best things was the material list. With that I got estimates from different supply yards and saved me many trips to the store. I even managed to impress my wife with all this efficiency!

I’ll tell you now that if the time and money I would have spent using those free online doghouse plans makes me shudder.   Either our new pooch, “Lucky” would be sleeping in my bed or he would not be with us!   At the end of the day, knowing that  “Lucky “ is being properly cared for is priceless!

Don’t take the risk of harming your dog by downloading free doghouse plans online! Surely your pet deserves a dog kennel that has enough space and keeps him warm, comfortable, safe and dry?

Do You Need Saltbox Shed Plans to Build a Nice Saltbox Shed?

post date August 1, 2010 Posted by admin

Here’s 3 Reasons Why Salt Box Shed are a Must!

So you’re looking to build a saltbox  shed?  Good choice! As you probably know, the saltbox shed gets its name from New England colonial structures and has a unique shape all of it’s own so it really can add charm, character and practicality to your outdoor living space.  The unique roof design has a long rear slope  and a short steeply angled slope at the front allowing for increased storage because the front of the building is actually two stories and slopes back to a single story level.  You can put in double doors at the front and can store lawn tractors, snow mobiles and personal watercraft.

Although I’m a do it yourselfer I find that I save myself a lot of time and trouble in the long-run by getting professionally designed blueprints for any I do.  Here’s 3 reasons why you need a good set of saltbox shed plans to build a nice salt box easily and quickly.

  • This style of roof requires some unusual and complicated cuts and could be challenging to build.  Saltbox  shed plans come with a cut charts, giving you the measurements of every single part.  If you take the charts down to the local lumber yard the guys down there will cut the pieces for you so that you only have to fit the pieces together like a big puzzle.  No chance of wasting money on scrap lumber from measuring or cutting mistakes!
  • A detailed set of saltbox  shed plans will also save you extra trips to the supply house because they come with a complete material list right down to the number of nails you need.  This means that you can work out how much this is all going to cost you up front and you can even take the list to various suppliers to get the best deal on the materials.
  • Check with your local building department to make sure that you have permission to build a saltbox shed .  You may need a building permit if you have permanant foundations or your shed is over a certain size.  Often neighbourhoods have a set of rules and regulations that you have to stick rigidly  to and there may be certain restrictions on your shed is designed, what colour you want or where you want to place it.  You can be sure that a good set of saltbox shed plans will conform to building codes.

Garage Building Plans

Plans-Save Time , Money and Trouble!

Building your own garage is usually out of most homeowners even if they are pretty good at do it projects.  Although you may want to take on this project as a challenge,  the possibility is equally there to hire the job out to a local contractor.  Whatever you course of action you decide upon, a very good idea is to get a good set of garage building plans so you can either use them to build the garage or save a huge amount of money paying your contractor to charge you for the privilege of using his very own design.

With the effects of the recession there are all kinds of contractors, framers and construction workers who are looking for work that will be glad to take on the building of your garage for you.  If you have a set of garage building plans that comes with a material list you can go to a lumber yard and get the best price on the materials.

When your chosen contractors submit their proposals for the job that you can supply them with the materials down to the last nail and sets of garage building plans.  In the past most would have not taken on the job because the materials could not be marked up, but as I mentioned, in today’s economy everyone is playing by a different set of rules and you can save a fortune in construction cost if you know how.

Other aspects of the construction as well like painting or wiring the garage or perhaps even installing the garage door will be well within your capabilities and can therefore be done by you .  Again though, you need a detailed set of garage building plans so you know what it is and what you cannot take on .

All of these little jobs add up and your contractor usually has to hire outside subcontractors for each phase of construction. Each subcontractor gives the contractor his price and then the contractor bumps  it up again before passing on the final proposal to you.  Cutting out just two of these sub contractors and doing the work can save you hundreds of dollars!

Potting Shed Plans

3 Essential Features For a Pretty and Practical Potting !

My wife really has green fingers!  She loves to spent hours planting her favourite blooms  and nurturing them to grow. I remember the day that I kept tripping over  the hundreds of pots ,bags of topsoil and fertilizer that were slowly filling up my  whole garage and  I realized then what I would give my wife for her Birthday –a potting shed!

Now I’m a do it sort of guy so I immediately went online and looked for some potting shed plans.  From experience I know that buying a set of professionally designed plans would help my newest project run smoothly.  I  only had three weekends left until the big day and I couldn’t afford to waste any time!

Here are 3 essential features of potting shed plans that will help you to build a pretty but practical structure.

1.   A quality set of professionally designed potting shed plans comes with a materials list so you know exactly what you will down to the last nail. This means that you can take the list to various suppliers to get the best deal on your lumber.  You will also know how much it is all doing to cost you in advance. The plans will also conform to local building codes and if you build a shed that can actually be used for more than just simple storage it may be required that you get a permit.  Other factors to consider along with the cost of materials will be the cost in paint or stain to protect the sheds surfaces.  You will also need to have a foundation for your potting shed it you want it to last any time.

2.  Pick a set of potting shed plans with enough head room.  There is no point in building a potting shed where you have to stoop to do your  potting!  Not very comfortable at all.  Another feature that will make your workspace inside more pleasant is a window to let in natural light.

3.  One of the things my wife loves about her gardening is being outside, especially in fine weather so it’s nice to have an extension of the shed roof to install an overhang and install a potting bench beneath it.  You can make it to your specific requirements height wise as you can with the benches you install inside the shed.

The potting shed was the perfect present for my wife and she loves her little hide away where she  can pot plants to her heart’s content even on a rainy day!  It is a pretty but practical little gem of a structure that my gardening friends envy.

Do It Yourself Shed Plans

Why You should Not Do Do It Shed Plans !

Do It Shed Plans

Although I’m a bit of a do it sort of guy, I only recently did I start actually using professionally designed plans.  Before that, I used to waste a lot of time on woodwork projects that never turned out the way I wanted.  Even when I thought I had everything measured to the last detail, I got it wrong.  It was all very frustrating and a waste of my hard earned cash.  Shoot! Were do it projects not supposed to save time and money?  Well  these professionally designed building plans I use now not only reduce costs but overall time to complete my projects.  My last investment was in do it yourself shed plans.

We have accumulated a lot of clutter over the years and, even though our house has loads of closets and an attic, we are running out of places to put everything so I decided I need to a storage shed.  Only problem was, I didn’t want it to turn out like all the other woodwork projects I had tried.

I went online and learned how important a good solid foundation was and that I probably would need a building permit.  I soon found a set of do it shed plans that seemed to fit the bill and they were just what I needed to clear the way for my new project with the local building department. Here are the steps I followed to build my shed using  do it yourself shed plans

1. Having got permission to build I prepared my site, clearing it of undergrowth, plants and trees and making sure that it left room for easy access and for my shed which was “a little bit bigger” than I needed at the moment as we do tend to accumulate possessions.

2. I laid the foundation blocks-so important if you want your storage shed to last for any time at all.

3.What I liked most about my do it shed plans was that they came with a full material list down to the last screw and nail which made my trip to the hardware store very easy indeed. They also included lumber cut sizes so I could make sure I bought the right amount of wood and have it cut to the right sizes and kind of just fit it all together. No more expensive mistakes and it means you know in advance how much it’s all going to cost you!

4. Once I had framed the walls, it was time for me to build the roof, cover it in shingles and installed the pre-hung doors.

5. Finally I took a step back and waited for the admiration of the neighbours and the brownie points from my other half.  I wasn’t disappointed on that score!

I learned that being a do it yourselfer does not mean you should go it alone.  So here’s the choice.  Do you want the difficult and time consuming task of creating your own shed plans and you may not do it the right way or just spend a few bucks and get a set of professionally designed blueprints?
